PROPOSED RENEWABLE FUELS FACILITY
Overview
Located on the ancestral lands of the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS), the proposed 7Mile Renewable Fuels Facility is a joint project between TteS, Sc.wén̓wen Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), and Azure Sustainable Fuels. This project marks a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector. Together, we are co-developing a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to producing renewable fuels (sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel) in line with domestic and international mandates aimed at reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
Established in 2021, this collaboration is guided by shared commitments to environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and sustainable economic development that align with TteS values. The vision of this project has been incorporated into the updated 7Mile master planning documentation.
Since its inception, TteS and Azure have actively engaged the local community through multiple open houses, fostering transparency and gathering valuable feedback to inform the planning and design of the renewable fuels facility.
Azure Sustainable Fuels, a Canadian corporation, is dedicated solely to the development of this facility. As a single-purpose entity, Azure’s entire focus is on the success of this initiative.
Project Location
The proposed facility is located within Kamloops Indian Reserve No. 1. This site is part of the planning area for the 7Mile and Area Masterplan, which has been shaped by various planning influences since 2005.
Its strategic location offers key advantages:
- Proximity to Kamloops: Just 8–10 km from the City of Kamloops, a regional hub with a population of over 100,000.
- Major Transportation Routes: Conveniently located with direct access to Highway 5 (Yellowhead), just minutes from connections to Highways 1 and 97, and only 20 minutes from Kamloops Regional Airport.
- Rail Connectivity: The site is adjacent to Canadian National Railway (CN) tracks, linking key provincial regions and supporting domestic and international trade. The railway also serves tourism routes, including the Rocky Mountaineer.

Key Aspects of the Facility
- Annual Feedstock Processing: At full operations, the Facility will convert approximately 1 million tonnes of feedstock per year, producing around 20,000 barrels per day of renewable fuels (sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel).
- Sustainable Feedstock Sources: the Facility will use primarily Canadian canola oil.
- Proven Technology: The Facility will employ commercially proven technology to ensure efficient renewable fuels (sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel) production.
- Transportation Infrastructure: Rail will serve as the primary mode of transportation for both feedstock and renewable fuels.
- Significant CO2 Reduction: The entire process is expected to reduce approximately 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually as opposed to using traditional fossil based fuels.
- Commitment to Indigenous Values: Azure is dedicated to respecting the histories, cultures, and values of Indigenous Peoples, integrating Indigenous perspectives throughout the project’s development and operations.
What is "SAF" or Sustainable Aviation Fuel?
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a drop-in fuel that blends seamlessly with traditional aviation fuel to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It complies with the strict safety standards required for aircraft use and is produced from feedstocks that meet recognized sustainability guidelines. Interest in SAF has grown significantly, with airlines increasing its use from just 500 flights in 2016 to nearly 450,000 flights by 2021.

Making a Difference Together
Supporting the Local Environment and Economy
